At SEE Impact, we are dedicated to fostering sustainable development and resilience in vulnerable communities. Our recent Rapid Needs Assessment in the West Nile region of Uganda, conducted in collaboration with @oxfamNovib and @URDMC under the LEAP II Project, has provided key insights into the needs and aspirations of refugee and host communities in Yumbe and Terego districts. This assessment focused on tree-growing initiatives and the adoption of energy-saving stoves, crucial elements in addressing environmental challenges and enhancing livelihoods.
Tree-Growing: A Path to Sustainability
The assessment involved 66 farmer groups from both refugee and host communities. It was clear that these communities are eager to engage in tree-growing activities, with particular interest in fruit trees (jackfruit, mangoes) and timber trees (teak, eucalyptus). While most groups had little prior experience in tree planting, they expressed a strong desire to participate, recognizing the numerous benefits such as improved food security, income from timber and fruit sales, and environmental protection. However, challenges like limited access to land, destruction by animals, and the need for better-quality seedlings were identified as obstacles that need to be addressed.
Clean Energy: A Healthier Future
The use of traditional three-stone stoves is widespread among refugee households and host communities posing serious health risks due to smoke inhalation. Our assessment found a significant awareness of these dangers, with communities eager to transition to clean energy stoves like Lorena stoves, which are made from locally available materials. Despite the strong interest in cleaner cooking solutions, affordability, lack of materials, and insufficient training on stove usage are major barriers to adoption.
Bridging the Gaps
Our findings underscore the importance of providing both technical training and resources to ensure the successful implementation of these initiatives. By empowering communities with the tools and knowledge to plant trees and adopt energy-saving stoves, we can help them build more sustainable livelihoods while mitigating the environmental impact of deforestation and traditional cooking practices.
At SEE Impact, we are committed to supporting these communities as they take steps toward a greener, healthier, and more sustainable future. Through continued collaboration with partners and local stakeholders, we aim to drive meaningful change and create lasting impact in West Nile and beyond.
