Update: 400+ Households in West Nile Receive Clean Cookstoves Through LEAP II Project

We’re excited to share progress from the LEAP II (Advancing Women’s Leadership, Empowerment, and Resilience in Uganda’s Refugee Response Phase II) project in West Nile, where our team, working hand in hand with partners, has successfully distributed clean cookstoves to over 400 households. This effort represents a significant step toward enhancing community well-being, mitigating environmental degradation, and promoting sustainable energy use.

With support from our dedicated partners—UN Women Uganda, Oxfam Novib, and the Uganda Refugee Disaster Management Committee—this initiative has brought practical, life-enhancing solutions to vulnerable refugee and host communities in the region.

Why This Matters

🔥 Health & Safety: Traditional open-fire cooking exposes families, especially women and children, to harmful smoke. The clean cookstoves drastically reduce indoor air pollution, improving respiratory health and overall safety in the home.

🌿 Environmental Impact: By using significantly less firewood, these energy-efficient stoves help curb the rampant cutting of trees, thereby contributing to local forest conservation and climate action goals.

💡 Fuel Efficiency: Households supported will spend less time and effort collecting fuel, freeing up hours for income-generating activities, education, and caregiving responsibilities.

This clean energy distribution is part of LEAP II’s wider mission to enhance livelihoods, energy access, and environmental protection across Uganda’s refugee-hosting districts. Through strong collaboration with our partners and community stakeholders, we are driving meaningful change where it is needed most.

We extend our sincere appreciation to:

  • Norwegian Embassy in Uganda for

  • UN Women Uganda for championing gender-responsive climate solutions, women's empowerment, and resilient livelihoods,

  • Oxfam Novib for continuous technical and financial support for protective-sensitive access to clean cooking for refugees and host communities.

  • And we appreciate the teams at the Uganda Refugee Disaster Management Committee (URDMC) for the joint activity implementation and coordination.

Together, we are creating healthier homes, empowered communities, and a greener future.
